Bravery
Beowulf is either very brave and very stupid. He swam in an ocean for seven days- STUPID, fought Grendel to save the Danes- BRAVE, came back and fought Grendel's mother when he could of said no- BRAVE, fought a dragon when clearly he knew that he could not win and would leave his people in jeopardy- VERY STUPID. The point is although it seems that he didn't value life he was very brave to have done those mighty feats. No one I know could do any of those things as bravery (this type of bravery because I'm brave enough to tear of a band-aid) is a trait seen in epic heroes. - Jhanielle
Generosity and Hospitality
This theme is brought out by King Hrothgar and Queen Wealhtheow. The code of the comitatus is at the heart of Beowulf. In this system, the Feudal lord must provide land and weapons with his warriors and a share of treasures with them in return for their support of their leader in battle. This would sure get people nowadays to fight for him. I mean who would turn down free land and treasures!
When booty is seized from enemy in battle, everything goes to the king. It sounds really selfish but don't worry he doesn't keep it all. He allots it to each warrior based on their achievements. I don't know about you but that would push me to do well. As you can see, the king not only had to be kind, he had to be rich too!

Characterization in Beowulf
Grendel
Grendel is a greedy monster, eating around thirty men at ONCE when I know for a FACT that two or three could full him. Yes he is a man eating monster, I give him that but his gluttony (one of the seven deadly sins at that) is unbelievable, that's like me or you eating thirty whole roasted chickens!!
Beowulf
Beowulf is the hero of all heroes. He is the prince of Geats and is strong, brave and courageous. Once he makes a promise he stands by it no matter what the cost, even if he dies trying. While many of us think that is stupid and just calling for attention, it was acceptable at those times.(sighs. I know, I couldn't live in those times either). They were said to be brave for doing this.
